The short version: judge a trademark consultant on four things, who actually files (a registered professional or a back-office queue), whether fees are fixed and split from government fees, whether they handle objections and oppositions themselves, and whether you can reach the person on your file. The four questions worth asking anyone, including us
- “Who signs my forms?” Filings before the Registry should be handled by a registered trademark agent or advocate. If the answer is vague, your application is being resold to one.
- “Is the quote fixed, and is the government fee separate?” Bundled “all-inclusive” prices hide margins and blur what the Registry actually charges. Insist on the split.
- “What happens if it’s objected?” Roughly speaking, objections are where cheap filings become expensive. Ask who drafts the reply, what it costs, and whether they attend hearings, before you file, not after.
- “Can I call the person handling my matter?” A file number is not a relationship. You should know your handler’s name and have their number.
