The short version: a logo is registered as a device mark under the same TM-A process and fees as a wordmark, government fee from ₹4,500 per class (indicative, verify at ipindia.gov.in). The strategic question isn’t the form; it’s whether to file the logo, the name, or both, and in what order.
Wordmark vs device mark vs composite, the honest framework
| Filing | Protects | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| WORDMARK | The name itself, in any font, style or colour | Budget for one filing; name is the asset customers say aloud |
| DEVICE | The visual logo as depicted | The symbol is recognisable without the name (rare early on) |
| COMPOSITE | The name-plus-design combination as a whole | Name and design always appear together, with the caveat below |
| BOTH | Name and logo independently | The standard strategy for growing brands |
The composite caveat: protection is for the whole, so a copycat lifting only your name into a different design, or only your symbol, is harder to stop. When clients ask us to “just file the logo with the name inside”, this is the trade-off we make sure they’re choosing knowingly.
Before your logo is filed
- Device search, logos are searched via Vienna codes classifying their visual elements; we run this alongside the word search
- Originality check, a logo bought from a marketplace template can be someone else’s copyright; we confirm you own what you’re filing, and advise on a copyright registration for the artwork where it adds value
- Colour strategy, broad (no colour claim) versus specific colours, decided on how the mark is used
- Clean artwork, a high-resolution file in the exact form you want protected
